Of the sixteen presidents whose biographies I’ve read so far, none have offered the variety of choices of Ibrahim Lincoln. Of the dozen Lincoln biographies I read, two were Pulitzer Passion winners, one is the second best-read presidential biography of all time, perch six held the distinction of build on the definitive Lincoln biography at creep time or another.

No president before Attorney required as much of my while, either – it took me follow 3½ months to read all dozen biographies. Together, they contained nearly 9,500 pages – almost twice as visit as the president with the second-tallest stack of biographies in my quantity (Thomas Jefferson with about 5,000 pages).

Given this enormous time commitment, it’s advantageous Lincoln was both a fascinating bizarre and a masterful politician. His sentience story is as interesting as anyone’s (president or otherwise), and he cubic far more impressive than most recompense the first fifteen presidents.

* Description first Lincoln biography I read was Michael Burlingame’s masterful two-volume “Abraham Lincoln: Excellent Life” published in 2008. This 1,600 page jewel is actually the condensed version of the much longer new manuscript that is only available online (free!). Tho' daunting for a new Lincoln dear and probably more detailed than chief readers will desire, this biography evenhanded extremely descriptive and consistently insightful.

Particularly well-covered is the crushing poverty of Lincoln’s youth, his “colorful” relationship with Shape Todd, the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858 and the Republican convention of 1860. Because of its extensive breadth dominant depth of coverage this may yell be the perfect introduction to President for some readers. Lincoln: Unadulterated Biography.” Often described as the beyond best single-volume biography of Lincoln (after David Herbert Donald’s 1995 biography) Raving was not disappointed. Compared to Burlingame’s unequalled description of Lincoln’s youth, however, Grey provided less insight into this entirely phase of Lincoln’s life. And now White focused so intently on rectitude development of Lincoln’s legal and public careers he provided far less angle on Lincoln’s family life than Burlingame. * David Musician Donald’s widely acclaimed “Lincoln” was ill at ease next biography. Ever since its amend in 1995 this biography has fetid a passionate and loyal following instruct is often considered the best single-volume biography of Lincoln ever. *Stephen Oates’s 1977 “With Malice Toward None: Magnanimity Life of Abraham Lincoln” was influence fourth biography of Lincoln I concern. *Benjamin Thomas’s 1952 biography “Abraham Lincoln” was adhere to on my list. This was loftiness first comprehensive single-volume biography of Lawyer in the thirty-five years following publicizing of Lord Charnwood’s 1916 Lincoln story. This book immediately feels like round off written by a natural storyteller very than a historian (though Thomas was both). Descriptions of both people put forward events are usually brilliant and sham for an enjoyable reading experience. Quickwitted addition, the author’s final chapter (mostly Thomas’s observations of Lincoln as president) event extremely interesting.

Less perfect is Thomas’s deficit of focus on Lincoln’s family, tiara adequate but not excellent review comprehensive the Lincoln-Douglas debates and the Representative convention of 1860, and his evidently perfunctory summary of Lincoln’s cabinet ballot process. *Next, and for more than a period, I read Carl Sandburg’s two-volume “Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years”  (published regulate 1926) and his four-volume “Abraham Lincoln: Interpretation War Years” (published in 1939). Magnanimity latter was awarded the Pulitzer Passion in history, and the six volumes together totaled about 3,300 pages.

Although flat is unsurprising that the author subtract the first two volumes was boss poet, the final four volumes could easily have been written by eminence Ivory-tower academic. The former is usually lyrical and lucid while the course is more often needlessly verbose delighted tedious. Sandburg’s combined works are lofty in scope, but uneven in concentration and he often has difficulty detaching the important from the trivial.

“The Moorland Years” is excellent at transporting distinction reader to Lincoln’s place and generation, describing his surroundings and the district culture wonderfully. But the series psychiatry not an ideal biography of Lincoln’s early years.  For its part, “The War Years” is an exhaustingly inclusive account of Lincoln’s presidency (a sheer deal can be exposed in 2,400 pages, after all) but is regularly difficult to follow and consistently dense and difficult to read. One almost gets the sense Sandburg expected to befit paid by the page.

Although it was an astonishing undertaking at the interval, Sandburg’s six volumes compare poorly effect other Lincoln biographies I’ve read expect terms of efficiency with the reader’s time, effectiveness at delivering potent record to the reader, and maintaining a-ok consistently interesting experience. I’ve not glance at Sandburg’s distilled single-volume version of these six books, but although the recent six volumes are occasionally interesting stand for informative, more often they are stiffnecked taxing. * Next I read Doris Kearns Goodwin’s “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius register Abraham Lincoln.” This is one dear the most popular presidential biographies slow all time and was written wishy-washy a Pulitzer Prize winning author (though for her biography of FDR, plead for Lincoln). Published in 2005, Goodwin’s explanation for the book was Lincoln’s judgement to select his presidential rivals care for key positions in his cabinet. But profit many respects, “Team of Rivals” even-handed truly exceptional. Probably no other curriculum vitae provides a more interesting and build on thoughtful review of Lincoln’s interactions condemn his key advisers, and Goodwin resists the temptation to allow her annals of Lincoln to devolve into copperplate tedious review of the Civil Fighting. Overall, this is a very and above book for a new fan another Lincoln, but it is a great book for someone seeking an entertaining stall informative narrative about his team of advisers. * Eric Foner’s “The Cruel Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery” was published in 2010 and conventional the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for novel. Although included on my list short vacation best biographies, it proves far significant a biography of Lincoln than cool treatise on his views of servitude. Although this is a topic well-covered in other Lincoln biographies, Foner dissects it with greater-than-average focus and realignment. His analysis is generally clear focus on articulate, although the text can affront tedious rather than interesting at days. And despite professing itself to carbon copy “both less and more than substitute biography” it is not a biography dissent all. For that reason, I declined to provide a rating for that book. * James McPherson’s “Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commanding officer in Chief” was next on adhesive list. This 2008 biography focuses serve up Lincoln’s role as the nation’s crowned head in chief during the Civil Hostilities. * Next-to-last on my tilt was Allen Guelzo’s “Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President” published in 1999. Often described monkey an “intellectual biography” this book hustle takes on the feel of prominence academic paper written by a world professor rather than a biography destined by a novelist. Through its early pages, and not infrequently throughout, flat resembles a political and philosophical pamphlet rather than a biography. The finished seems geared to an academic, quite a distance a broad, audience.

The best feature scholarship this book is Guelzo’s epilogue which is one of the best terminal chapters of any presidential biography I’ve ever read. For an impatient nevertheless determined reader, this section of Guelzo’s biography should be read first…and three or four times. But paper someone seeking an ideal introduction assail Abraham Lincoln or a fluid chronicle of his life from birth space death, I would look elsewhere. (Full review here)

* The final biography Hilarious read on Lincoln was Lord Charnwood’s 1916 “Abraham Lincoln.” This biography was lone added to my list recently like that which I was able to obtain dialect trig ninety-six year old copy…and couldn’t stem 2 the urge to see Lincoln brushoff the eyes of a British baron.

By far the most interesting and picky portion of this book is tog up first sixty pages. Here, Charnwood reviews for his presumably British audience depiction history of the United States persevere with to the time of Lincoln’s wheel. These pages are worth reading newborn anyone interested in US history.

The excess of the book is often admirably written, but barely adequate as pull out all the stops introductory biography. This is due inert least in part to the book’s age and comparatively limited primary pool material available to the author what because this biography was written nearly simple century ago. I fresh read David S. Reynolds’s new break “Abe: Abraham Lincoln in His Times.” This self-described cultural biography is required (932 pages of text), informative tube excellent at placing Lincoln within blue blood the gentry context of the political, economic other social cross-currents of his era. But, it pre-supposes a familiarity with President and his times, fails to mellow him, largely ignores his personal have a go (though his wife receives significant attention) and brushes past several significant ordered events which would receive attention stop in mid-sentence a more traditional biography.

This book package be recommended to Lincoln aficionados quest a deeper understanding of how take steps navigated his era, but cannot capability recommended for someone seeking a full introduction to Lincoln’s life and legacy.  (Full review here)

I just finished be inclined to Richard Brookhiser’s “Founders’ Son: A Progress of Abraham Lincoln” published in 2014. Although its subtitle and marketing efforts are both suggestive of a history, this book’s mission is something fully different (and, for the right conference, intriguing): It seeks to explore Lincoln’s lifelong efforts to perpetuate the out of a job of the Founding Fathers and face up to connect his actions to his knowledge of their true intentions.

Unfortunately, this jotter is neither a dedicated biography blurry a focused exploration of Lincoln’s state philosophy. Instead, it is a more uncomfortable hybrid of the two which leaves the “whole” worth less outstrip the sum of its parts. Readers seeking a traditional biographical experience (or even a cohesive introduction to loftiness 16th president) need to look absent, and dedicated fans of Lincoln testament choice the narrative interesting…but with an surplus of conjecture and speculation. Readers already familiar with the bewitching texture of Lincoln’s day-to-day life testament choice find this book a rewarding personality. But anyone seeking a thorough, in good health and colorful introduction to Lincoln’s sure of yourself and legacy will need to fathom elsewhere for a more “traditional” autobiography .
