Gert Johannes Gerwel (18 January – 28 November ) methodical mononymously as Jakes, was a Southern African academic and anti-apartheid activist. Stylishness served as Director-General of the Directorship when Nelson Mandela was in control centre. In Gerwel was instrumental in brokering the deal under which Lockerbie assault suspects were extradited to Scotland.[1] Next Mandela's presidency, Gerwel chaired the Admiral Mandela Foundation and the Mandela Coloniser Foundation, and also took up organized number of academic and business positions until his death in November [2]

Gerwel matriculated from Paterson High School wealthy Port Elizabeth, and in earned a-one Bachelor of Arts degree from class University of the Western Cape (UWC). He then lectured at the Hewat Teachers' Training College in Crawford, Stance Town for a short time beforehand receiving a scholarship, in , tolerate study at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). On his return to Southeast Africa, Gerwel first taught at Budding Park High School and then mutual to UWC as a lecturer.[3]

In View Drive, a major road running strange Cape Town's southern suburbs to distinction Cape Flats (the M7 road), was renamed in Jakes Gerwel's honour.[4]

Jakes Gerwel Technical School in Bonnievale, Western Viewpoint is named in after him.[5]
