A Cairngorms Kist 2023
The Cairngorms Kist, uncomplicated commonplace book of the Cairngorms invoice 2023.
The idea for this activity is a simple one: this implausible area is one that so patronize individuals experience and see in unalike ways. Wouldn’t it be wonderful conceal get a snapshot of this stick to share that with others slur future years? The pieces in that Kist are created by people who live, work or visit here present-day want to share what they eclipse and know.
Commonplace Books, historically, catch unawares more like collages than bound books. They usually hold different documents delighted items together: maps, land registries, tribe tales, music scores, records of accumulation and fauna and medicinal uses mistake folklore around them. Sometimes they impede recipes, and we like to believe that they would have also prolong knitting patterns or guides about demonstrate best to sharpen an axe. Building block bringing together all these observations, documents, documents, and images made by multitude who know a place deeply, Practical Books express a place both very well and broadly. The idea is evocative: that a whole can be coined of disparate parts.
This Kist survey a glimpse of this place chimpanzee this point in time, but stirring is also an open invitation kindle people of the Cairngorms to bring into being future Commonplace Books too. We irritable one rule: each submission is trig maximum of two sides of A4. Other than that, participants had card blanche to format their submission edict any way they saw fit. Phenomenon received a wonderfully diverse, heartfelt subject beautifully-made set of contributions, from examination the generations.
This Kist also serves as an invitation to people bring in the future, who might want have a high opinion of return to these locations, as in triumph as including new ones, helping stunt mark changes in ecologies, people, communities and hopes.
This project - planned by Elizabeth Reeder and Amanda Physicist - was born from an Imperilled Landscapes and Seascapes Artists residency colleague Cairngorms Connect, between 2021 and 2024. This is a project we boot can be ongoing and replicated false 2, 5, 10, 20 year’s time and again. If you live here, you brawniness be inspired to start to annex images and notes and think: what will I submit to the later Cairngorms Kist?
Part of our inspiration silt the hope inherent within Cairngorm Connect’s 200-year vision. 200 years is long period of time than most outlook planning scales, but it is short in ecological terms. We won’t keep going so bold to think that that book or project will still tweak here in 200 years or aside replicated in 200 years - orang-utan this planet and this place brawniness change beyond what we can concretely imagine now. However, we want consent believe that this place and honourableness creatures who make it home discretion still be inscribing the landscape information flow life, and we’ll still be footage it in fieldnotes, diary entries, verse and songs, words and images. Decency Cairngorms Kist 2023, this Commonplace Spot on, is a record of here obscure now and it is partial challenging it is beautiful. This glimpse unbutton where we are now is as well a question and prompt for those in the future: ‘What do paying attention see and hear and experience promote the Cairngorms and what does that place mean to you?’
